Applicability of Gravity Separation to Recycling Biodegradable Plastics

Biodegradable plastics should be appropriately managed independently of general during and after use. To establish an effective recycling process for biodegradable plastics, the present study investigates evaluates applicability gravity separation. Experimental results indicate that a laboratory specific-gravity separator achieves recovery ratio >98% at purity >99.9% light-density as float product. We performed simulations by discrete element method coupled with computational fluid dynamics to investigate effect particle size feed quantity on separation efficiency. A systematic series reveal particles such polypropylene heavy-density are well-separated.
